Tom, dedicated to championing understanding and restoring dignity, grew up in Roswell, NM. He attended New Mexico Military Institute, where he received a Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army at age 19. In 1986, he attended US Air Defense Artillery Basic Officer’s Course in Ft Bliss Texas.
He progressed from platoon leader to Executive Officer and Interim Battery Commander. He was promoted to the rank of Captain. He served six years in the New Mexico Army National Guard. He completed his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from the University of New Mexico.
In 1991, he completed an inter-service transfer from the Army into the Air Force and was selected to fly F-16 fighter aircraft for the New Mexico Air National Guard. He flew over 1600 hours in the F-16 including numerous combat missions over the war torn regions of Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia. During which he was qualified in all standard F-16 combat skills as well as low level, night, terrain following interdiction (LANTIRN), including self-designated laser guided bomb employment.
In 2003, after he completed training as Combat Operations Director, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, (OEF) Operation Iraqi Freedom, (OIF) and Operations in the Horn of Africa, (HOA) where he functioned as Senior Offensive Duty Officer at the Combined Air Operations Center in Doha, Qatar. While there, he oversaw and managed all ongoing aerial offensive operations throughout the three theaters of operations and participated in senior level coordination between coalition army and air services deployed in Iraq.
From 2003-2007, served the National Guard Bureau as the director of Joint Training, where he directed the National Guard Bureau sponsored Exercise Patriot Program. There, he coordinated the implementation of joint operational training for over 7700 National Guardsmen, Regular and Reserve Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine units, and foreign servicemen. He directly improved experiential joint training to improve soldier and airman expertise in joint operations. While attached to the National Guard Bureau, He coordinated the integration and tactical implementation of several humanitarian relief efforts to facilitate speedy restoration of basic life necessities.
Starting in 2009, he served as Global Operations Director and Deputy Director of Operations at the US Air Mobility Command, Tactical Air Command Center, (TACC) at Scott Air Force Base. There, he regularly coordinated and directed numerous strategic and tactical material and personnel movement around the world aboard Air Force and Chartered Military aircraft, in support of ongoing worldwide operations. He personally oversaw Presidential transportation and movement to locations worldwide involving hundreds of personnel in classified operations.
After over 29 years of service, he retired from the military in 2012 and received numerous decorations.
Tom was hired at Continental Airlines in 2001. A few years later Continental merged with United Airlines. When not assigned to military duty, he would spend the next 21 years flying the Boeing 737, 757, 767, and the 777 aircraft for United. On August 6, 2021 United Airlines declared a mandate to take an unapproved medical product (EUA covid shot) or face termination. Tom refused to comply for religious and other reasons. He obtained a religious exemption but was forced out of the company and in the spring of 2022, he was constructively discharged by United and forced to retire for not complying with their illegal covid shot mandate. After many months of searching, he found employment again flying for a corporate company. He now flies for a regional airline.
Tom Floyd is a Co-Founder of Wings for Accountability whose purpose is to establish accountability with families, communities, corporations and government leadership.
Tom is one of 28 plaintiffs in the Wings For Liberty And Justice lawsuit filed January 19, 2023 against United Airlines. He is also a co-author of the soon to be released book – Wings For Liberty And Justice: Our Relentless Pursuit For Justice.
